Fidyah means the price paid to relieve someone from a distressing situation. As a religious term, it refers to the financial compensation paid for not being able to fulfill the worship of fasting or for remedying some defects committed during the performance of the pilgrimage. “Those who cannot afford to fast should pay a ransom of one poor person's sustenance.” (Baqara, 2/184). A fidyah is the amount of food that would feed one person for one day, or the price of it. This is the same amount as “sadaqa al-fitr”.
Those whose health does not allow them to fast in Ramadaan must pay a fasting ransom to those in need for each day they are unable to fast.
